Even better than the excellent movie with DiCaprio! ( )

If the final ending is the "true" ending the book is kind of precious and pointless. Sort of light but with really bad stuff thrown in to give it an illusion of meaning. ( )

I decided it was about time I read a Lehane novel BEFORE the movie came out and made me think, "Oh, I've already seen the movie, I should read a book where I don't already know the ending instead."

And what an ending it was, although one I saw coming. I think it's because I've read (or maybe watched) similar stories before, and Lehane did a good job setting up some clues.

Highly recommended for anyone who likes atmospheric mysteries. The whole setting is very creepy, and the previews for the movie fed some great imagery into my head to go with the words. ( )

Awesome book. I gotta admit I saw the movie before reading the book so I knew exactly what was going on. As much as I liked the book I do believe the movie was better. That could be just because the "surprise ending" wasn't a "surprise". All in all I would recommend this book only if you haven't seen the movie. If you have seen the movie the book doesn't give you much more, it's the same, just in print form. Sooo if you have never read it nor seen the movie.....toss a coin. They are both good and well worth the time. ( )

Very fast moving mystery/pyschological thriller (I read this in three sittings). I really liked the two marshall characters but the story was predictable. This author has written Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone which were turned into movies. If the movies are anything like this book, it would be a good summer popcorn movie.

Teddy said, "Who's "she"? Where did "she" come from, Chuck?" - "There's always a she, isn't there?"
Waking, after all, was an almost natal state. You surfaced without a history, then spent the blinks and yawns reassembling your past, shuffling the shards into chronological order before fortifying yourself for the present.
"How many psychiatrists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?" - "I don't know. How many?" - "Eight." - "Why?" - "Oh, stop overanalyzing it."
Charm was the luxury of those who still believed in the essential rightness of thing. In purity and picket fences.
He struck Teddy as the kind of guy who needed watching, too secure in his own fulfillment of his parents' wildest dreams.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 038073186X, Mass Market Paperback)

The year is 1954. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, have come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Multiple murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this remote and barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance. As a killer hurricane bears relentlessly down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades -- with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war. No one is going to escape Shutter Island unscathed, because nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. But then neither is Teddy Daniels.
